The big mobile picture

I just read that Admob has launched a new unit to target iPhone campaigns; also Meebo has created an iPhone app for its popular chat service.

I think the iPhone is great, but I am just curious, how many iPhones have been sold?  I mean, Apple hopes to get 1% of the global mobile market by sometime 2008.  That would be impressive, but still, that leaves 99% of the rest of the world minimized to "normal" phones.

Hmm…Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, wake up you guys, start marketing, someone get me the Nokia Marketing Manager on the line!

You guys are the leaders in the mobile game, not Apple, what's going on.  Is it fear, intimidation, or strategy (waiting to strike at the right moment)?  Whatever it is, Apple is out BUZZING you guys, and not a peep, whimper, or umf!!!  I mean come on, show some metal, get out and fight, innovate, advertise, reach out to developers!  WiMax is on the way, so mobile operators pushing your products at the store level, will not hold out much longer.

Last time I checked you all got some cool phones out their, and hey HTC phones with Windows Mobile are really great devices, I have the S710 myself.

And to mobile advertising companies, we need to stop targeting devices and work on the ad model, because basing revenue on CLICKS is just outrageous.  At Wadja we have used all kinds of Mobile Ad Networks and the Cost per Click model DOES NOT WORK for mobile devices.  I mean take a step back and think about it, who is going to click ads on mobile phones?  It is just a silly assumption.  Web OK, mobile phones are different devices.

We need to understand that the mobile web will not be a browsing all over the place, type of experience, but more of a, “I know what I want, let me connect and get it” type of deal.  So let’s not let ad companies dictate the name of the game here with CPC models, mobile ads should be all about branding, coupons, targeted offers, interesting media downloads.  I mean we have the technology to deliver ads to a user’s actual physical palm, and we are fighting for a .05 cent click…JEEZ!!!  The big losers in this game will be the publishers for sure!

As for developers, creating stuff for the iPhone is cool, but I prefer to look at the whole worldwide global market, iPhone included.  Many more Nokias and Samsungs out their, and the Openwave, Opera Mini and Mobile Explorer’s are all cool developing XHTML based mobile browsers.  Wadja looks great on all these browsers (http://m.wadja.com).

Let’s not loose sight of the forest from the trees.
